Avalon’s products employ time-proven, globally-deployed Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (or “VRFB”) technology to deliver reliable, economical power. VRFB technology has been in the global market for decades. Avalon’s approach is novel in that we employ patented materials and a fully-integrated turn-key product architecture. These technologies allow our products to achieve exceptional levels of reliability at very low cost.
Inherent to Avalon’s VRFB technology is the stability of the vanadium chemistry itself. Unlike technologies that rely on different elements to make up the positive and negative cells of the battery, VRFBs use vanadium as both the positive and negative “couple”. This means that the technology cannot become contaminated and degrade over time.
Similarly, because the vanadium is dissolved in a stable, water-based solution, the risk of fires are dramatically mitigated in the VRFB. Avalon has worked with leading fire safety experts to assess the risk of a fire in or near our products. The results of that assessment: That our products are substantially safer to operating personnel and first responders, as compared with other battery technologies.
Finally, Avalon’s VRFB is shipped to site in a 100% complete turn-key configuration – a first for the flow battery industry. That means that every battery we ship, to every customer, has been built, tested and certified to stringent quality standards before it leaves the factory. This yields faster installation, lower commissioning costs and far more reliable performance in service.
In operation, the durability of Avalon’s products mean decades of dependable performance with low maintenance and zero augmentation. Avoiding those costs over the life of the product, combined with a low initial capital investment, means those products’ levelized cost of storage (or “LCOS”) is 0.08 USD/kWh today, and is expected to be below 0.03 USD/kWh by 2025. Deploying lithium ion batteries to deliver that same performance is far more expensive: 61% more expensive today, and over 230% more expensive by 2025.
